"Pruning, the secret to producing better quality olive oil"

04/02/2019

A valuable initiative for the development of the primary sector and the strengthening of the competitiveness of the agricultural economy was undertaken by the intellectual Center of Kalessa by organizing the 3rd cycle of seminars on the cultivation of the olive, on Thursday, January 31.

The event was held with the cooperation and support of the companies Proactive - Business Consultants and Cretan Mill Albandakis, with the aim of informing producers about the rational pruning of the olive tree and the production of more and better quality olive oil with respect for the environment and the physiology of the olive trees.

The response he got was impressive, proving that the key issues that concern the producers of Crete today need specialized information and the provision of specialist knowledge.

The CEO of Proactive, Nikos Bounakis, said that competition in the olive oil market is constantly intensifying and consumer demands are constantly increasing. He emphasized, among other things, that Greece, as an olive-producing country, has not been able to meet these demands, nor has it been able to win its share of the market.

Cretan oil has significant comparative advantages that allow producers to have significant benefits if they adopt all those means and practices that will expand their share in the international market.

The speaker at the event was Dr. Spyridon Lionakis, Researcher, Agronomist and Emeritus Professor of Arboriculture at the School of Agricultural Technologists of the TEI of Crete.
