Take away à la Cretan: Combining fast with healthy

03/08/2021

Cheese pies and vegetable pies, pancakes with honey, sandwiches with apaki and anthogalo, dakos, mizithropitakia, all these and many more recipes with the "smell" of Crete will be able to be enjoyed by tourists and the island's residents with their coffee, combining the fast with the healthy, in the context of the new initiative "Cretan Dekatian - Cretan Brunch" of the Agri-Food Partnership of Crete.
Coffee, snack and mass catering (take away) shops, bakeries, patisseries and related businesses, whether inside or outside Crete (such as, for example, pan-Hellenic coffee chains) will be able to participate in the initiative by posting the "Cretan" sign on their window Decatiano" and offering local traditional products based on 50 recipes proposed by the Agri-Food Partnership or their own, as long as they always use products from the island.
In order to receive the mark, they must meet a series of conditions and be certified by the Agri-Food Partnership of Crete. The first check will be done within 15 days from the submission of the application and the second – together with advisory support – later, based on the purchase documents of raw materials and the certificates of their suppliers.
According to the specifications that have been established, for Cretan businesses other than bakeries, the "Cretan Decatian" will cover 30% of all available food, while of this 30%, 30% will concern sandwich-type products and two recipes must use Cretan graviera. That is, if a business has 100 food codes, 30 will be "Cretan Decatian" recipes with 9 being sandwiches.
For the bakeries of Crete, the mandatory percentage is set at 20% of all codes and sandwiches at six, while for businesses outside Crete the percentage of the "Cretan Decimal" is set at 10% and sandwiches at three. In all stores it is mandatory to use Cretan graviera in at least two products.
As for the products, most such as olive oil, cheeses, nuts and honey should come 100% from Crete with 50% from companies certified by the Agri-Food Partnership with the "Crete-Home of Values" label. For fruits and vegetables, the corresponding percentages are set at 70% (from Crete) and 40% (certification with "Crete - Origin of Values", for baked goods 80% and 50%, while for bread it is defined in the businesses of Crete that it comes from by 80% from bakeries on the island, a percentage that decreases to 10% for businesses outside Crete.

Cretan Dekatiano: Combination of fast and healthy
"The philosophy of the brand is based on 50 modern, recommended recipes, based, however, on the traditional values and products of Crete. A tithe, healthy, with nutritional value and with a variety of flavors. A quick meal with "aroma" and Cretan products, which the consumer will be able to get from the morning together with his coffee or drink", points out the president of the Agri-Food Partnership-regional advisor, Mr. Stavros Tzedakis, adding that "through the Cretan Dekatian we want to highlight the unique taste of Cretan products and the benefits it has on human health".
For his part, the advisor of the Agri-Food Partnership of the Region of Crete and managing director of PROACTIVE, Mr. Nikos Bounakis, states to "R": "given that the modern lifestyle favors the consumption of ready-made food, the Cretan Dekatian can combine " the fast with the healthy".
Mr. N. Bounakis highlights seven important advantages for businesses to participate in the initiative:

They "build" their image with safe and quality products.
They differentiate themselves from the competition of nameless products.
They participate in a network of shops with a single brand.
The "Cretan Decatiano" brand will be promoted through an advertising campaign.
They promote local products, which imply quality and safety for the consumer.
They contribute to environmental protection and sustainability, reducing the carbon footprint.
They contribute to self-sustaining growth.
The Cretan diet can function as a single brand and provide elements of differentiation and surplus value to the businesses that will adopt it", underlines Mr. N. Bounakis and explains:
"Revenues from the consumption of local products will be recycled to a large extent in the local economy, creating conditions for self-sustaining development. Instead of, for example, supporting Dutch and Danish farmers by buying cheeses from those countries, we should trust the superior nutritional value of Cretan cheeses."
